Injuries can prove detrimental, at least at this point in the season, and can hurt teams' postseason aspirations. The MLB regular season is just under two months away from its conclusion and most teams already know their future, whether they are in postseason contention or not. Those who are in will need to take extra care of players to make sure they are available when things matter most.
While the Yankees' Anthony Volpe exited Thursday's game early, Colorado's German Marquez has been ruled out for the season. Let's take a look at the injury updates coming in from the day:
#1 Anthony Volpe exits game vs. Angels due to foot pain
The New York Yankees shortstop exited the game against the LA Angels in the eighth inning after fouling off a ball on his left foot. He was examined by the Yankees' head physician, Dr. Christopher Ahmad, on the field and decided to exit the ball game. Oswaldo Cabrera replaced him at his position on the field.
Volpe was taken for imaging and as manager Aaron Boone updated, the results were negative and the team is treating it more like a bruise.
“He’s in pretty good spirits right now,” Boone said. “We’re treating it as a contusion. Hopefully everything is alright and he’s back out there.”
However, Boone remained silent on Volpe's participation in Friday's game.
#2 Colorado lost German Marquez for the season
The Rockies gave a disappointing update concerning German Marquez, who made his season debut on July 14 against the Mets after undergoing Tommy John surgery last year.
On July 22, the Rockies placed him on 15-day injured list for right elbow inflammation. After seeing no good recovery on his elbow, Marquez was shut down from baseball activities and with not much time left in the season, manager Bud Black announced the worst.
The Rockies have been hit badly when it comes to starting arms. They were already without Márquez and fellow right-hander Antonio Senzatela (who also had Tommy John surgery last year) for most of the season.
Kyle Freeland missed a good part of two months this season due to an elbow injury and then Ryan Feltner left Wednesday's game after just pitching one inning. However, with them not in contention to make the postseason, they can use this opportunity to try out their farm system in the remaining time.
Other injury updates
Luis Rengifo of the Angels will undergo season-ending right wrist surgery. He had a great year, slashing .300/.347/.417 with six homers, 13 doubles, 30 RBIs and 24 stolen bases.
Michael Grove and Miguel Rojas were activated from injured list, while Dodgers saw returning Brusdar Graterol to another major injury. He will be out for the rest of the season, nursing his Grade 1 hamstring injury to make a potential comeback in the postseason.
Gerrit Cole, who skipped his last start due to body fatigue, is in line to start on Sunday against the Toronto Blue Jays.
