There were some good and bad news in MLB's injury update roundup on Tuesday. Yankees are set to miss their star infielder due to injury while crosstown rivals Mets are set to welcome back a veteran face to their lineup. Here's looking at these updates in detail:
#1, Jazz Chisholm Jr. suffers UCL injury
Yankees deadline day signing Jazz Chisholm Jr. will, unfortunately, miss some action after suffering from a UCL injury. The third baseman suffered the injury while running to home plate from second base during the team's 12-2 loss against the Chicago White Sox on Monday.
Chisholm's injury comes as a blow to the Yanks who are reaping rewards from his trade. The 26-year-old was batting at .316 with 11 RBIs from 18 hits in 14 games including seven home runs. The severity of the injury will be determined after results on Wednesday.
#2, Mets about to welcome Starling Marte to lineup
Starling Marte has missed MLB action since June 25 after a bone bruise in right knee placed him on the IL. Before his injury setback, he was batting at .278 with 30 RBIs on 68 hits and seven home runs.
The veteran resumed baseball activity three weeks back and has since featured in minor league rehab stints. He is scheduled to play in the outfield on Thursday and Friday for Triple-A Syracuse before getting back to the Mets outfield for their series against the Miami Marlins during the weekend.
#3, James Paxton unlikely to return for season per Alex Cora
Red Sox's pitching woes continued on Sunday when trade deadline acquisition James Paxton was forced to leave the game against the Astros due to a lower leg injury.
MRI results on Tuesday indicated a partial calf tear that will require a significant amount of nursing. As per manager Alex Cora, it is unlikely that Paxton will return to the mound this season.
"We’ll see where we’re at in a few weeks. Just stay the course, get the rehab going and hopefully, he can contribute. But that looks like a long shot,” Cora said.
Paxton was re-acquired by Boston in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The veteran had a 1-1 record with a 4.09 ERA in three starts for the team.
