As the regular season wares on, the long, hectic schedule is starting to take a toll on the pitchers. While some are nursing injuries and trying to come back, others are headed to the Injured List.
Here's a look at the major injury updates in the MLB:
#1. Yankees pitcher Luis Gil faces 15-day IL stint
The Yankees were forced to put starting pitcher Luis Gil on the 15-day injured list due to a lower back strain. The rookie left Tuesday's game against the Cleveland Guardians in the fourth inning. Gil has pitched 124.2 innings this season and holds a 12-6 record with a 3.39 ERA.
Analysts have speculated that Gil, upon return, can be added to the bullpen to give it more stability. Starter Clarke Schmidt is expected to return soon after nursing a right lat strain that has sidelined him since May.
#2. Dodgers Yoshinobu Yamamoto set for more rehab work
Yoshinobu Yamamoto has been on the injured list since mid-June with right triceps tightness. The 25-year-old had a 6-2 record with a 2.92 ERA in 14 starts before being placed on the 60-day injured list. Yamamoto pitched three innings in a simulated game on Wednesday.
As per manager Dave Roberts, the Japanese pitcher is expected to throw three more innings before a complete rehab assignment in the next three days.
The team has yet to set a return date for their 12-year, $325 million signing but it is expected that he will make a few starts in September to get in full gear for the postseason.
#3. Ranger Suarez set for Saturday start for Phillies
After a rocky couple of weeks after the All-Star break, the Phillies seemed to have found their mojo on the field. In further good news, pitcher Ranger Suarez is expected to be back on the mound soon. The 28-year-old has been out since late last month due to lower back tightness.
Suarez threw 57 pitches in a simulated game on Saturday and added another 20 later in the bullpen. As per manager Rob Thompson, he should be ready to start against the Kansas City Royals on Saturday. He has a 10-5 record with 2.87 ERA thus far.
