MLB analyst Jon Heyman is carefully optimistic about New York Mets pitcher David Robertson stepping up to the plate to fill Edwin Diaz's shoes.
Edwin was injured during the celebration after Team Puerto Rico edged past Team Dominican Republic in the 2023 World Baseball Classic and advanced to the quarterfinals last week. He suffered a full-thickness tear of the patellar tendon in his right knee. On March 16, 2023, Diaz underwent surgery and will take eight months to recover and will miss the 2023 MLB season.
Heyman did not dismiss the notion thar David Robertson might be able to lead the New York Mets pitching rotation capably, in the absence of Edwin Diaz.
"The Mets’ current plan seems to be to hope that Robertson, with his 157 career saves, can tough it out. And maybe he can. He has average stuff now but gigantic cojones. So maybe that works," writes Jon in his latest New York Post column.
"David looks like the Mets’ Opening Day closer. But here’s why the Mets need to go get Edwin’s kid brother to close." - New York Post
Through the 2022 MLB season, David's stats are:
- Win–loss Record: 57–36
- Earned Run Average is 2.89
- Strikeouts: 977
- Saves: 157
