The New York Mets and Pete Alonso still seem to be in a deadlock over a new contract in free agency. With Alonso and his agent Scott Boras also not looking to budge, New York might be tempted to look at other options.

Rumors have swirled of another star infielder, Alex Bregman, over a potential move to the Mets this offseason. But, per Mets insider, Andy Martino, Bregman's Mets deal is highly unlikely.

"A lot of smoke around the name Alex Bregman, really with both New York teams, because it's a big name, but I find it almost impossible to see Bregman signing with the Mets unless it's the kind of one-year or very short-term thing" Martino said.

Martino also suggested alternatives that Carlos Mendoza's lineup could use. First of them included having a platoon system in the infield with Mark Vientos biding time between third and first base and youngsters like Ronny Mauricio, Bretty Baty and Luisangel Acuna slotting in the corners from time to time.

His second proposition was adding an outfielder like Jesse Winker or Jurickson Profar who would have the flexibility to be a backup at first base and could also play as the team's DH.

His third alternative was directly trading for a first baseman whose name had floated in the trade market. This includes Luis Arraez of the San Diego Padres and Triston Casas of the Boston Red Sox.

MLB insider Bob Nightengale lists another alternative to Alex Bregman for Mets

Bob Nightengale of USA Today claimed that the New York Mets have emerged as favorites for Alex Bregman due to their deadlock with Pete Alonso. But he also suggested an 'obstacle' to that deal getting finalized.

As per the insider, veteran 3B Nolan Arenado, has agreed to waive his no-trade from the Cardinals could potentially be an addition to the Mets or even the Boston Red Sox infield.

"The biggest obstacle for Bregman is that the St. Louis Cardinals also have a premier third baseman on the market, and Nolan Arenado said he’ll waive his no-trade clause for the Red Sox and Mets," writes Nightengale.

Nolan Arenado moving to 3B in Queens would mean Vientos would have to play elsewhere, most likely at first. Francisco Lindor and Jeff McNeil are the team's shortstop and second baseman respectively, rounding off the infield.
