The New York Yankees acquired Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Miami Marlins during the trade deadline for minor league catcher Agustín Ramírez, infielder Jared Serna and infielder Abrahan Ramírez. The trade turned handy for the Yankees, thanks to Chisholm's versatility to play anywhere in the infield.
This will also impact how the Yankees go ahead in the offseason incase they don't land prized free agent Juan Soto. Free agent shortstop Willy Adames was the option floated by MLB Network host to MLB insider Mark Feinsand, who elaborated on how the Yankees can move around in the infield if they want to sign the former Brewers slugger.
"Willy Adames is one of their primary Plan Bs," Feinsand said (1:30 onwards). "Obviously, there’s an opening in the infield in the Bronx. Now, where that opening is isn’t shortstop, but second base is going to be open—Gleyber Torres is a free agent. Third base could be open as well. Jazz Chisholm could move over to second or even go to the outfield if needed.
"So, they have some options. One of those options, from what I understand, is signing Adames, maybe moving Volpe to second base or Adames to third, and shifting Jazz Chisholm to second. Chisholm’s versatility gives them flexibility in terms of what they need."
Willy Adames will be a good addition for the Yankees, says Mark Feinsand
Carrying his point further, Mark Feinsand believes signing Willy Adames can turn out to be good for the Yankees. Adames had career highs with 32 home runs and 21 stolen bases while slashing a .331/.462/.794 batting line. Moreover, he played 161 games last year, highlighting he can be their everyday guy in the infield.
"Adames would be a great addition for them," Feinsand said. "He’s a great clubhouse guy. Obviously, he had a huge year last year in terms of home runs and RBIs, though he didn’t have a great defensive year. But in 2023, he was one of the top defensive shortstops in the game. So, I think Adames is a guy they will certainly look at if Soto winds up signing elsewhere."
At the moment, the Yankees front office is completely focused on landing Juan Soto. A couple of days ago they reportedly upgraded their offer to the outfielder, including opts-out as asked by Soto. It remains to be seen if it will be enough for the Yankees to retain him.
