The MLB offseason has picked up pace since the Winter Meetings, with several free agents finding new teams over the last few weeks, but All-Star slugger Pete Alonso's future remains uncertain.
The four-time All-Star has been in the news ever since the option for free agency at the end of the 2024 season. He also declined a qualifying offer from the Mets in search of better value in free agency.
Earlier this week, MLB insider Carlos Baerga reported that the Mets had offered the first baseman a $90 million deal over three years, but Alonso's agent, Scott Boras, is reportedly seeking a contract of around $200 million.
Senior MLB insider Jon Heyman talked about Alonso's free agency and the "most obvious" fits for him among interest from a few teams. Heyman said:
"The power guys, for whatever reason, are still out there. But Pete Alonso as I reported a couple days ago, and of course things can change in a hurry, him and the Mets were in a bit of a gap at this point in terms of the negotiation. So no guarantee he's going back to the Mets. That certainly is an at this point a possibility. But the Giants and the Jays have been very active in this market.
"The Giants and Blue Jays have not signed a ton of players and they still have money to go. Certainly all the teams that went for Soto have money left. The Mariners are another team that needs offense and you know, they're most likely option."
While Heyman named four teams in the race for Pete Alonso, he also warned of a surprise team, highlighting Corbin Burnes' mega deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks earlier this week.
"But it's difficult to get free agents to go there. Very tough Park, particularly for right-handers, but I'd say those are the other teams that are most obvious at this point, Giants, Mariners, Blue Jays along with the Mets. But there are surprises in free agency as we saw with Corbin Burnes, so you never know."
Giants emerge as potential landing spot for Pete Alonso
While the Mets remain one of the strong contenders for Pete Alonso, given their financial might and the All-Star first baseman's familiarity with Citi Field, the San Francisco Giants have emerged as a potential landing spot for Alonso.
The Giants were one of the teams reportedly in for Juan Soto and have already shown their desire to compete by singing Willy Adames to a franchise record seven-year, $182 million deal in the offseason.
According to San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser, the Giants aren't done in the offseason and are willing to make another splash with Pete Alonso's potential signing in free agency.
