The Boston Red Sox emerged as a serious contender for Alex Bregman, but their interest may have waned a little bit. Several teams have looked into Bregman, but there haven't been any offers and it doesn't appear that the third baseman is signing imminently.

The Red Sox appeared to be the strongest landing spot, but that may not be the case anymore. That may be influenced by a different player who is not even available.

Per Bob Nightengale, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. might have interest in joining the Red Sox if he's not extended by the start of Spring Training, and Boston could be waiting the situation out.

“If Guerrero Jr. doesn’t receive an extension by ST, he’ll test free agency, and likely will be wearing a Boston Red Sox uniform in 2026," the insider said. "He would love to be with the Red Sox, friends say, which may be why the Red Sox are hesitant in their pursuit of Bregman.”

If the Red Sox sign Bregman now, then that likely takes them out of contention for Guerrero Jr. Having both of them would give them four players that play first and/or third base and only one DH spot, so it would be a logjam and there wouldn't be enough playing time.

Boston could be leaving the Alex Bregman sweepstakes

After momentum began to form behind the Alex Bregman to Boston rumors, things have significantly cooled down. The Red Sox, in fact, might even be taking themselves out of the running.

John Denton, a St. Louis Cardinals insider, reports that there's now a lot more traction behind a trade for Nolan Arenado than a Boston signing of Bregman in free agency. Denton also said via Newsweek:

"Boston could be close to pulling out of the sweepstakes for free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman, who could potentially command a deal worth $200 million, per the source."

Whether it's because of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. or Nolan Arenado, the Red Sox seem to have pumped the brakes on signing Bregman to a massive contract in free agency.
