Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. are key personnel for the San Diego Padres as they aim to win it all. To do so, they'll need to overcome the challenge posed by their divisional rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers, who once again took away the best crop of the offseason to strengthen their roster.

Meanwhile, the Padres have remained relatively quiet this winter, recently losing Jurickson Profar to the Atlanta Braves on Thursday.

During an appearance on the "Baseball Insiders" podcast, MLB insider Robert Murray shared intriguing thoughts about how Padres' stars Machado and Tatis Jr. might be processing the situation.

"I've spent time around Manny Machado, spent time around Fernando Tatis Jr., and I know the kind of competitors that those guys are," Murray said. "They love winning; they want to win a World Series, and they were going all in when Peter Seidler was running the show there. [24:53 onwards]
"Now, they're seeing their team lose players in free agency. They're shopping or listening on some of these guys on their roster. And you see the Dodgers just go all in, making any move that they want. I wonder what they're feeling right now. I would love to have a conversation with those guys. I don't have any insight on what they're thinking, but I can't imagine they're too happy at this point."

While acknowledging the tough offseason, Robert Murray also pointed to the unpredictability of Padres GM AJ Preller, calling him one of the savviest executives in the league.

"That being said, there's a lot of offseason left, and if there's one thing I've learned, it's to not rule out A.J. Preller," Murray added. "He lurks. He knows the market better than, I think, any GM in baseball because he's involved in every conversation. So, we'll see. But yeah, this has been a tough offseason for the Padres—a very, very tough offseason."

Amid all the buzz, the Padres have a couple of contract and trade situations coming up. Dylan Cease, Robert Suarez and Jake Cronenworth are all trade subjects this offseason given they'll turn free agent after the 2025 season. With that in mind, the Padres could look to trade one or all of them in exchange for high-potential players or prospects.
