The Chicago Cubs went on a limb to sign Cody Bellinger to a three-year, $80 million contract only to trade him off a year later to the New York Yankees, who will also receive $5 million in cash consideration in exchange for pitcher Cody Poteet.

However, the move makes perfect sense for the Yankees who could use a versatile defensive player in Bellinger, who could play anywhere in outfield and first base, according to Robert Murray. Moreover, Bellinger's presence would benefit Aaron Judge's career, with Murray saying (via The Baseball Insiders podcast 4:05 onwards):

"As for his position, they're leaving it open, but you have to figure most of his time will be in center field. That makes plenty of sense because it moves Judge out of center field and back to right field, where he’s at his best. This creates a much more effective outfield while also prolonging Judge’s career.
"Bellinger, in that ballpark, figures to do very well. It’s a fit that made sense for all parties involved. It improves the Yankees' lineup post-Winter Meetings."

Robert Murray shares potential reasons why Cody Bellinger might have been traded by the Cubs

Cody Bellinger won the NL Comeback Player of the Year with the Cubs in 2023. He wanted a long-term deal last offseason, but since it didn't happen, he compromised on a three-year deal with opts-out in place after the first and second year.

However, following a disappointing season, Cody Bellinger exercised his player option instead of turning free agent, rendering the Cubs to pick his massive salary. Murray feels that although "it was salary dump" by the Cubs, he finds Bellinger a good asset there.

"As for the Cubs, I want to pivot real quick and address the situation. It’s frustrating that they felt they had to do this because the Cubs are a big-market team," Murray said. "They should not be operating by pinching pennies or shedding payroll. I know Bellinger’s salary is higher than they would have preferred, but he’s still an effective player and a good clubhouse presence. They really liked him in Chicago.
"It’s unfortunate, but I’m under the impression that they will use the money saved from this trade to reinvest in the roster. They can address numerous positions—they're looking at the rotation, the bullpen, and obviously adding more bats alongside Kyle Tucker. There’s a lot for them to do."

Cody Bellinger will look to get back his career on track with the Yankees, who will give him plenty of opportunities in the lineup as he aims to ace the 2025 season and use his player option, become a free agent and sign a long-term deal.
