With Spring Training a few weeks away, the offseason has started to get dull, with teams seemingly reluctant to splash big on players. One of the players who was expected to be on the radar of several teams, Jurickson Profar, is without a team in his prolonged free agency.
Despite a career-best season with the San Diego Padres in 2024, the All-Star slugger has failed to sign for a team in the offseason. Talking about Jurickson Profar's future, MLB insider Robert Murray said on "The Baseball Insiders" podcast:
"Jurickson Profar is a very underrated player, under-appreciated and he's thrived in San Diego. Last year, he had a few offers to leave San Diego, but he took less money to stay in San Diego and this offseason I think we're going to be in a spot where the Padres are not going to be in a position to offer Profar exactly what he wants and they're going to be a decent amount behind unless they trade a player."
Murray believes that a reunion with the Padres is off the table with Profar reportedly seeking a three year deal. However, the insider predicted a high-profile team to sign the All-Star slugger.
"My guess as of this point is that Profar is playing elsewhere in 2025. He's got a pretty strong interest overall around the league. I know there's a bunch of teams that are involved and I mean big market teams, that's what I can say as of this point, but I expect him to get a pretty lucrative multi-year deal."
MLB insider rules out one team from Jurickson Profar's potential suitors
Jurickson Profar is coming off a career-best season with the Padres that helped the NL West team to a high-octane NLDS against rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers. Profar hit a career-high 24 home runs with 85 RBIs, earning him a maiden All-Star call and Silver Slugger award in 2024.
Although Robert Murray didn't name the team leading the race for Profar, he ruled out one team from the race. He said:
"I'll also tell you I do not think Profar is going to the Pittsburgh Pirates unless those prices drop to a very, like, lower than it is now; I do not anticipate him going to the Pirates."
The Los Angeles Angels habe been linked with a move for Jurickson Profar but are yet to make a offer in the offseason.
