The Boston Red Sox traded for White Sox ace Garrett Crochet and signed World Series winning pitcher Walker Buehler to a one-year $21.05 million contract. Both players are expected to strengthen the pitching staff for the 2025 season.
Speaking on "The Baseball Insiders" podcast, Robert Murray said that Red Sox fans should be happy with the additions the team made this offseason. He also praised general manager Craig Breslow for his efforts in bringing in Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler.
He added that in the past, the organization often abandoned efforts to pursue major names after an initial attempt. However, despite a limited budget, Breslow and his team have managed to do a commendable job.
"The fact that they got Buehler, who I think is gonna end up being very good this year, and also getting Garrett Crochet, who to me was the best left-handed arm, or just one of the best arms in general available, that was really good work by Craig Breslow. He's tried for a lot of different things, and I know Red Sox fans are very sick of hearing 'oh, we tried' or 'the Red Sox were interested' or 'they were seriously involved,'" Murray said (Timestamp: 18:14).
"I get you're sick of hearing that, but your GM is trying. He is doing a very good job, and the fact that he's made these additions and he's also not done, you should end up being very happy because I think he's done a good job considering the circumstances here. I would agree," Murray added.
Craig Breslow on Red Sox last requirements before Spring Training
Speaking before the end of the calendar year to Boston Red Sox media, Craig Breslow made it clear that the team is looking to add a right-handed at-bat. He did not provide any specific names but expressed confidence in their ongoing communications with various players.
“As you probably can imagine, I’m not going to speak about specific pursuits. I can say that right-handed bats that we feel like could play well at our park are certainly of interest to us, and we remain engaged on a number of fronts,” Breslow said.
The Boston Red Sox have been linked to Alex Bregman throughout the offseason. His right-handed batting provides the perfect balance for the team. However, acquiring Bregman for third base would mean moving Rafael Devers to first base, potentially leaving Triston Casas without a spot in the lineup. Breslow mentioned during the press conference that they would consider trading Casas, presenting the team with a good problem to have if they land Bregman.
