Former Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman remains one of the biggest free agents available in the offseason with several teams rumored to be keeping an eye on the All-Star slugger.
Bregman won two World Series titles with the Astros in the first nine years of his MLB career and was elected for free agency after the 2024 season. The two-time All-Star was linked with a return to Houston but negotiations seemingly broke down earlier this month. The Astros' trade for third baseman Isaac Paredes and the signature of Christian Walker last week further cast doubt on a reunion with Bregman.
With the Houston Astros seemingly out of the race for Bregman, MLB insider Jon Heyman named the best fit for the coveted third baseman.
"I'm not gonna rule out Bregman to the Mets at this point. I think they do like him very much. Vientos would then go to First possible. The guy's a gamer with postseason history. The Yankees love him but the question there would be the ballpark more than anything, certainly not the kind of ballpark that Houston has been for him.
"I think the Yankees are pretty close to their limit for the most part, unless something crops up here. Uh, the Mets, you know, who knows what their limit is, maybe they go for Bregman. I don't know if they pivot from Pete Alonso right now. I think they're looking at Alonso."
Although Heyman didn't rule out the Mets, the senior journalist feels the Boston Red Sox are the best fit for the two-time World Series winner.
"I still think the best opportunities, probably are the Red Sox and the Detroit Tigers I've kind of seen where the Red Sox were split on it. I think the reason has to be and I'm mostly speculating, is probably that Rafael Devers wants to stay at third base. That could be the only reason to me. You switch Devers to first base, Bregman and that ballpark fits Boston so well, and that is really the best spot for him."
Yankees unlikely to pursue Alex Bregman in free agency
The New York Yankees have been one of the biggest spenders in the offseason after losing the World Series in five games against the Los Angeles Dodgers in October.
The Bronx Bombers have added Cody Bellinger after missing out on Juan Soto to the Mets. However, like Jon Heyman, YES Network's Jack Curry also feels Alex Bregman won't be a good fit at Yankee Stadium.
Not to mention Bregman's camp is seeking a contract worth around $200 million as he reportedly turned down a six-year, $156 million (approx) offer from his former team.
