Pete Alonso remains a free agent with less than a month to Spring Training, but three teams are currently being linked to the former New York Mets star. The 31-year-old was expected to re-sign with the Mets at some point during the offseason but nothing has materialized between the two sides yet.

While his future remains uncertain, MLB insider Robert Murray reflected on Alonso's free agency on "The Baseball Insiders" podcast (15:23 onwards):

"My understanding was that talks were not advancing with the Blue Jays as far as Pete Alonso goes... But the Blue Jays, they do remain involved in that. As I said, they're one of the most aggressive teams in free agency right now.
"As far as the reports today about the Angels meeting, I have not been able to confirm those... The Alonso market as we've seen has been Mets, Blue Jays, Angels. We'll see if there's any other teams that are involved in here."

Although Pete Alonso's camp reportedly turned down a three-year deal from the Mets earlier this month, Murray is not ruling out a return to Citi Field for the All-Star first baseman.

"I'm not ruling out a Mets return by any means. As I've said all along, I still think that's a great fit for both sides. But there's clearly interest from other teams and we'll see if that gets the Mets to fold or the Blue Jays to fold, but I don't think anything is imminent as of this point."

Alonso is looking for a long-term contract heading into his age 30 season. Moreover, he is coming off a down year, which does not help his case in free agency. As his free agency continues, Alonso will most likely have to change his demands to sign for a team before Spring Training.

MLB insider claims Pete Alonso is a victim of the ego clash between David Stearns and Scott Boras

Over the course of the offseason, New York Mets general manager David Stearns has not budged on how much he is willing to pay Pete Alonso to re-sign with the team. This has resulted in a stalemate which is yet to be resolved.

Speaking on the SNY Network, MLB insider Tiki Barber gave his take on the matter:

"David Stearns is a killer...the dude does not care about how you think you should be treated... Pete Alonso is a victim of the ego clash between David Stearns and Scott Boras."

There is clearly a clash between David Stearns' valuation of Alonso and what his agent Scott Boras is asking for. The longer they take to reach the middle ground, the more opportunity other teams have to sign the slugger at the last moment.
