One of the biggest names remaining on the open market right now is Alex Bregman. The two-time World Series champion has proven his effectiveness year after year on both sides of the ball and could become an impact player no matter where he signs this offseason.
It remains to be seen where he might land this offseason and even though he has been heavily linked to the Boston Red Sox, MLB analysts Matt Vasgersian and Harold Reynolds are not sold on the potential move.
The pair spoke on the latest episode of MLB Hot Stove, explaining that even though Bregman is an excellent player, the move to Boston might not make the most sense. Vasgersian said:
"Now you're going to say that you're going to bring in Alex Bregman and make for a weird fit. It was a weird fit when you brought in Trevor Story, you had to move some pieces around the chess board. You're going to do that again? I don't think Boston's the place."
Rumors about Alex Bregman potentially signing with the Red Sox have circled all offseason, however, the future of Rafael Devers has been one of the biggest question marks.
Since Bregman is the superior defender, there have been ideas about moving Devers to either first base or full-time DH, which is something that Harold Reynolds believes will be detrimental to Devers and his development:
"Word of caution to the Red Sox. If you put Raffy Devers at DH, you're in for a world of problems. He's too young and now you're going to take a guy, he has to be on the field every day if you want that body to hold up. You wanna make him DH? That's not good. It does not work out for young players like that."
There is a chance that the Boston Red Sox opt to sign Alex Bregman to a long-term deal anyways and figure it out on the fly. Current first baseman Triston Casas has been at the forefront of trade rumors all offseason, so his potential departure could make things easier for the team to sort out.
The two-time All-Star was elite again in 2024 for the Houston Astros, posting a .260 batting average with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs in 145 games last year. Although some teams may be reluctant to sign the 30-year-old to a long-term deal, he has been durable throughout his career, playing 145 games or more in six of his nine seasons.
Detroit Tigers might be Boston's biggest competitor to sign Alex Bregman
The concerns about what to do with Rafael Devers may never become an issue as a number of other teams are also in pursuit of the Gold Glove-winning third baseman. While Bregman has been linked to a number of teams this offseason, the Detroit Tigers appear to be the main threat to the Red Sox bringing him in.
The Tigers surprised everyone in 2024 by not only reaching the postseason but also by eliminating the Houston Astros in the AL Wild Card round. Despite their success, the team clearly needed help at the plate, and bringing in a star like Alex Bregman could be a game-changing move. If the Red Sox take their time, the Tigers might be able to swoop in to sign Bregman.
