The New York Mets will be looking to add a foundational player in the upcoming MLB Draft scheduled for July 14. While they hold the 19th pick, there are a ton of exciting players throughout this class.

Last year, they took Colin Houck in the Competitive Balance Round A, a high school shortstop from Georgia. This year, they may shift their sights on a college player.

MLB's Jonathan Mayo's early mock draft sees the club taking Mississippi State's outfielder Dakota Jordan. He was recently named a third-team All-American by Baseball America.

Jordan originally committed to Mississippi State to play both baseball and football but decided to focus on baseball. This goes to show the type of athlete New York could be getting.

Jordan had a wonderful 2024 season, turning a lot of heads and raising his draft stock. He went .354/.459/.671, stepping up from his impressive 2023 season as a freshman.

While there is no question surrounding his power and speed, some front offices are concerned with his contact rate. He will also have to work on his arm strength after the draft as well.

Who else could the Mets target with their first-round pick?

There is a lot of talent scattered across this MLB draft class. From the high school players to the college players, there are some exciting players that could be household names in just a few years.

While Jonathan Mayo focused on a college bat, SNY's Joe DeMayo agrees but sees the team going in a different direction. He views the Mets taking the University of North Carolina's outfielder Vance Honeycutt.

Honeycutt was huge for his team during the super regionals, sending his squad to Omaha for the College World Series. Unfortunately, their season would end after losing to Florida State.

Many scouts have argued that Honeycutt possesses the best defense out of all center fielders in this class. He has won the ACC Defensive Player of the Year Award the last two seasons.

However, there are concerns with his strikeout rate. This is something that he will have to work on after the draft if he wants to see big-league action quickly.

Both mock drafts seem to believe New York will take a college bat in the first round. With offense being a priority, it would make sense for them to go in this direction.
