MLB News: Gavin Lux injured, Ohtani’s debut and more

Here are some injury updates, news on player’s spring debuts and more on this MLB news roundup:

MLB News: Gavin Lux injured, could miss entire 2023 MLB season.

Dodgers starting shortstop Gavin Lux will likely miss the entire 2023 season due to a torn ACL and sprained LCL in his right knee. He sustained the injury while running the bases in Monday's game against the Padres.

Lux stumbled and his right knee buckled awkwardly after dodging a throw from the third baseman. He was expected to take over as the team’s everyday shortstop this season, but instead, the Dodgers will have to rely on Miguel Rojas and Chris Taylor to cover the position.

Lux will undergo surgery on his right knee on March 7 in Los Angeles.

Fernando Tatis Jr. made his long-awaited return to the San Diego Padres' lineup after a 17-month absence from the game. In his first plate appearance, Tatis worked an eight-pitch walk off Giants pitcher Alex Cobb before stealing second base and sliding feet-first, as he prefers.

Tatis went on to score the first run of the game on an RBI triple from Jake Cronenworth. This was his first appearance as designated hitter for the Padres, but he will be primarily used as the team's right fielder this season.

The player still has hurdles to clear as he is yet to make his defensive debut and is currently serving a 20-game suspension for a positive PED test. Despite this, Tatis has been welcomed back by his teammates and fans, and played impressively in his first game back.

MLB News: Shohei Ohtani could join a New York team according to insider.

ESPN baseball insider Jeff Passan believes that the Mets are now the dominant team in New York when it comes to spending and implied that the team could offer a "billion dollars" to Shohei Ohtani if he becomes a free agent.

Passan made the comments during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, where he also labeled the Yankees as the "little sister" of spending in New York. He said:

"How does it feel to have the little sister of spending in New York baseball?"

Ohtani, who is entering the final year of his contract with the Angels, has emerged as one of the game's biggest stars, and both New York teams are expected to connect with the Japanese two-way player when he hits free agency.

MLB News: Shohei Ohtani’s spring debut

Shohei Ohtani threw 2 1/3 hitless innings in his lone Cactus League game for the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday, ahead of the World Baseball Classic with Team Japan.

Ohtani was due to throw two innings, but went out for the third and threw 34 pitches, with two walks and two strikeouts.

The left-handed pitcher and designated hitter said he was pleased with the performance, especially with gaining experience with the pitch timer, despite new rules not being enforced during the World Baseball Classic. He will serve as both a starting pitcher and designated hitter for Team Japan.
