Wednesday was a historic night in the MLB for the New York Yankees, thanks to their captain Aaron Judge's 300th home run landmark. On the other hand, the Dodgers suffered a loss in a close encounter, while the Mets had a resounding win against the Athletics at home. Here's a deeper look into the games.
#1. Aaron Judge fastest to 300 home run mark
Aaron Judge hit his 43rd home run of the season and 300th of his career in the Yankees' 10-2 win over the White Sox on Wednesday.
The Yanks captain reached the milestone in rather bizarre circumstances. Juan Soto was intentionally walked by the White Sox before him.
Judge hit Chad Kuhl's 3-0 pitch into left-center field in the bullpen. He reached the landmark in his 955th game and 3,431st at-bat, which obliterated both fastest-first records. Previously, Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner (1,087 games) and legendary Babe Ruth (3,831 at-bats) held the records.
#2. Devin Williams retires Dodgers superstar trio
Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman were retired in order by closer Devin Williams to snap the Dodgers' five-game winning streak as Milwaukee won the penultimate game of the four-game series.
Williams required just seven pitches to get the better of the top of the Dodgers order in the ninth innings, earning his second save in as many opportunities.
Before their final at-bats, Betts and Freeman had already recorded two and three hits each, while Ohtani had a walk and two stolen bases.
“I don’t know if there’s a better 1-2-3 in the league,” Williams said. “It was definitely a good test. I passed it today. I might have to do it again tomorrow.”
#3. Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso homer in big Mets win
The New York Mets bounced back after losing their series opener against the Oakland Athletics. They won 9-1 on Wednesday on the back of some strong at-bats from their star players.
Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso combined for five runs, while Brandon Nimmo, J.D. Martinez and Mark Vientos all chipped in with an RBI each. David Peterson earned the win on the mound with 6.1 scoreless innings, which improved his 7-1 record and 3.04 ERA.
