They were some clutch performances in the MLB, mostly coming from teams in the NL West as the Dodgers and the Padres won, while the Cubs took a tough decision to DFA a bullpen arm to promote a newly acquired prospect. Here's looking at the updates:
#1 Cubs let go of Hector Neris, add prospect Jack Neely to bullpen
The Chicago Cubs announced that they are going to DFA closer Hector Neris and bring in No. 18 prospect Jack Neely, who was acquired from the New York Yankees at the trade deadline. Neris was signed during the offseason for a one-year $9 million contract. Due to lack of resources, he was pushed into the closer role.
Neris notched up 17 saves in 46 games but had a below average 3.89 ERA and 8-4 record. The 35-year-old veteran had a team option in his contract that would have been coverted into a player option of $9 million for 2025 had he made 60 appearances. That might be the primary reason why the Cubs chose to DFA him.
#2 Jason Heyward's three-run blast lifts Dodgers vs. Mariners
Jason Heyward's pinch hitting in the center fielder role lit up the Dodger Stadium when he hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Dodgers won by the same margin against the Seattle Mariners, earning an unassailable series lead in the process.
Heyward's tie-breaking blast was set up by solo home runs from the in-form duo of Max Muncy and Gavin Lux. Mookie Betts continued his buoyant return with an RBI double in the seventh. Joe Kelly earned the win on the mound, while Daniel Hudson closed out the game in the ninth.
#3 Padres earn series victory against Twins in dramatic fashion
The San Diego Padres have a never-say-die attitude that's putting them over the line in clutch situations. They earned a decisive 7-5 victory against the Minnesota Twins, which was their 32nd comeback win of this year.
After falling behind 5-3 in the top of the eighth, San Diego rebounded with a four-run bottom inning, with home runs from Manny Machado and Jurickson Profar. They reached 72-55 record this season and are three games behind the Dodgers in the NL West.
