With several teams having their rest days on Thursday, the majority of the noise was made off the field. On one hand Mike Trout announced an unfortunate end to his season while the Orioles are giving a top prospect his dream debut.
#1. Mike Trout will require second surgery to torn miniscus
Los Angeles Angels superstar Mike Trout shared heartbreaking news for his fans, announcing he will miss the rest of the season. The 11x All-Star has been sidelined since May after undergoing surgery for a left torn meniscus. After being on the shelf for some time, he was looking to make a few rehab starts with Salt Lake Bees in the Triple-A.
However, things have gotten worse since his first game back. Trout had to be removed after three innings. In the subsequent days he was completely shut down from running and recent MRIs showed that the 3x AL MVP will require a second surgery, ending his season.
Mike Trout has had long injury stints over the last few years. He has only averaged 66.5 games over the last five years and still has 6 years left on his record $426.5 million contract.
#2. Orioles call up star prospect Coby Mayo
Baltimore Orioles have called up infield prospect Coby Mayo. Regarded by many as a top 3 Orioles prospect in a strong farm system, Mayo has raked up impressive numbers in the minors. He hit .307 with 17 homers in 78 games in Double-A last season before his promotion. This season he has batted with .294, 20 homers and a 10.1% walk rate in Triple-A.
Coby Mayo is expected to take over from Ramon Urias in the third base duties. Urias has been hitting at a below average .244. With Mayo in the lineup, the Orioles are looking at a possible infield consisting of Gunnar Henderson, Jordan Westburg and their no.1 prospect Jackson Holliday in the future.
#3. Yankees let go of Chasen Shreve
New York Yankees released left-handed reliever Chasen Shreve from his minor-league contract. The team had signed him in June looking to bump him up to the senior team later. In 10 appearances for Scranton, Shreve gave away six runs, earning three on his own. He had 10 Ks and walked three.
However, the Yankees expected better from him. Shreve's departure was followed by the addition of Cody Poteet to the 60-day injured list, while Nick Burdi returned from the IL and was optioned to Triple-A.
