A major problem with the Red Sox last season was their pitching, which failed to show up. After four games this season, it seems like the problems are still persistent as Boston's pitching staff has given up 30 runs in the process.
In Monday's series opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Fenway Park, the Red Sox lost 7-6. A good batting lineup performance wasn't enough to lift them out of danger, as starter Kutter Crawford was hit all throughout the ballpark in the first four innings.
Crawford (0-1) needed 32 pitches to get through the first innings. He yielded seven runs and eight hits, including three homers. The relief pitchers did a considerably decent job of containing further damage, but it wasn't enough for the win. Podcaster Jared Carrabis absolutely blasted the team's performance on Twitter. He reasoned that a 4-0 series sweep over the Pirates was lost due to half decent pitching.
"That’s a shit loss. Red Sox pitching has to clean it up. Could be 4-0 with even half decent pitching to start the year. It’s just been bad minus Sunday. Offense is doing it all, but they can’t score 10 runs every night."
Earlier in the opening series against the Baltimore Orioles, Boston lost the Opening Day game 10-9 before bouncing back to take two wins in 9-8 and 9-5. Fans have been happy with their batting performance without their star Xander Bogaerts. However, concerns are growing for the pitching staff as Alex Cora is desperate to find the correct rotation.
Red Sox have to lift their game in the upcoming fixtures
The Boston pitching staff has their work cut out as they look to come back in the series to beat the Pirates. RHP Nick Pivetta got his first start since the 2022 season, in which he set career highs in wins (10), starts (33) and innings (179 2/3).
After this home series against the Pirates, the Red Sox will play in the road series against the Detroit Tigers and the Tampa Bay Rays. They'll return home to face the Angels in a four-game series.
