MLB is reportedly auctioning off a baseball that 2024 AL MVP Aaron Judge would prefer to forget about. During a monumental collapse in the fifth inning of the eventual World Series-sealing Game 5 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, Judge made his only outfield error of the entire season.
Judge did well to range under a looping line drive, but he briefly looked at the runner on first and the ball bounced off the tip of his glove. He couldn't throw it in time to double off Kike Hernandez at second.
That baseball is now being auctioned by the MLB. It was a big moment and a pivotal one for the Dodgers and New York Yankees, and it can be bought for a price. It's up for auction for $17,010 and counting, per Barstool Sports.
After a single, that drop by Judge, the only time he missed a fly ball all season, led to a catastrophe. An Anthony Volpe error and a Gerrit Cole mental miscue helped lead to five unearned runs to tie the game. The Dodgers would win 7-6 and lift the World Series title in Yankee Stadium.
MLB also auctioning ball from Gerrit Cole miscue
As mentioned, Gerrit Cole's mental miscue also contributed. The pitcher had gotten two outs without yielding a run before a grounder to first base seemed to end the inning.
A weird backspin led Anthony Rizzo away from first, and Cole was nowhere to be found. The speedy Mookie Betts beat it out, leading to a run and keeping the inning going.
The bid thus far is $6,610 and counting. While the Judge play was as baffling and devastating as it could be, Cole's mental blunder cost them dearly. A poor groundball would have concluded the inning with a five-run advantage rather than a tie ball game, as transpired.
Despite the Yankees bouncing back to take the lead, the momentum had shifted and they couldn't hold off the Dodgers and force a sixth game back in LA.
