MLB Spring Training 2023: Atlanta Braves Roster, Schedule, TV and Radio Listings

Atlanta Braves v Washington Nationals
Ronald Acuna Jr of the Atlanta Braves will be one of the most important players for his team in 2023

In 2023 the Atlanta Braves saw their grip on their division, the NL East, slip more than it has in years. Although the team captured their fifth straight divisional title, it was markedly more difficult than in recent campaigns.

The Braves lost Freddie Freeman in free agency after their 2021 World Series win. Some thought that Freeman's departure would hobble the team offensively and allow other contenders a chance at the divisional title.

Although the Braves trailed the New York Mets until the dying days of the season, they were able to tie their rivals in the final days. By virtue of their run differential, the Braves were handed their fifth straight NL East title.

The relief would not last long though. The Atlanta Braves were swept by the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLCS. It was the first postseason series win by the Phillies since 2009, and it left the Braves in a state of shock and confusion.

The Braves will kick off their 2023 pre-season against the Boston Red Sox at their facility in Fort North, Florida on February 25. Under Spring Training rules, the team will be able to carry up to 60 players. However, the roster will need to be trimmed to 26 players before opening day.

In addition to their starting lineup, the Braves will be inviting 26 additional non-roster players. The most prolific name among these is outfielder Kevin Pillar. Pillar, 34, signed a minor league deal with the team this past offseason. Pillar hit .231./.277/.415 with 15 home runs and 47 RBIs with the New York Mets in 2021.

The biggest change for the Braves will be at the shortstop position. Dansby Swanson played in the position last year before signing with the Chicago Cubs in free agency. It currently looks as though 22-year old Vaughn Grissom will be taking over. Grissom made 40 appearances at second base last year, hitting five home runs and 18 RBIs.

With the addition of former Oakland Athletics Gold Glove catcher Sean Murphy, the top of the Braves order looks even more threatening. Leadoff man Ronald Acuna only managed to hit .226/.274/.415 in 2022 after missing nearly a year with a serious injury. Look for those numbers to be much improved in 2023.

In terms of pitching, the Braves have a dynamic corps. Leading the way with 14 wins and a 2.48 ERA last year was Max Fried, who finished second in the NL Cy Young voting. Rookie right-hander Spencer Strider also had a serious season on the mound in 2022, posting an ERA of 2.67, with 202 strikeouts. Watch as the 24-year old Strider builds on that success this year.

As was the case last season, the Atlanta Braves' games will be televised on Bally Sports South. For fans who prefer to tune in on the radio, WCNN will be carrying all the action. Fans in Atlanta can tune in to 680 AM, with a host of other stations for fans tuning in across the American southeast.

In an increasingly competitive NL East, the Atlanta Braves will need to be better

Even if the Atlanta Braves can tie a team like the New York Mets, additional challenges await them in the postseason. 2023 will provide a sort of litmus test to see if Atlanta are still relevant in their division, or if their best days are behind them.

Spring training is an excellent chance to gain some early insight into what kind of a campaign the Braves will have.
