The New York Mets got off to a bad start this season. This season was always likely to be a rebuilding one, especially considering the injuries the Mets had early on. That likely meant a bevy of trades and departures of veteran players at the deadline just like in 2023.
However, the team has turned it on in June. The Mets are still out of the playoff picture, but they're playing much better. They sit at .500 after back-to-back offensive explosions and wins. Is that enough to warrant a reversal of course?
Exploring the Mets trade deadline plans
According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, there is internal strife over the current direction of the Mets. They are only 1.5 games out of the Wild Card, which suggests they're close enough to try. However, that still may not mean a playoff berth or any sort of run.
Nevertheless, they've reached that difficult stage between contending and rebuilding. Passan said, via MSN:
"Deep down, the Mets are grimacing at their recent run of success. They're too inconsistent to warrant adding players at the deadline if the cost is in prospect capital, and they're good enough that divesting themselves of a player like [All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso] would send a bad message to their woebegone fan base."
This is the reality of a depleted National League. It is top-heavy with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves, but tons of .500 or even worse teams are still in it.
This means that most of them, potentially the Mets included, will not be sellers. They might even be buyers. The new Mets front office likely won't spend, but they might also miss a chance to retool and start building for a better future.
Luis Severino, Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor, Harrison Bader, J.D. Martinez, and others have been mentioned in trade rumors. They would each likely bring in a solid haul, thus revamping and fixing a depleted farm system.
Now that they're back in the thick of things, trading any of these players seems unlikely. That leaves the Mets in limbo, which might be a bad thing for the future of the franchise.
