The MLB Trade Deadline is scheduled for July 30, after which teams won't be able to make acquisitions from other teams to address their weaknesses or trade away expiring contracts for better prospects. Though most trade talks have seemingly gone to rest, there are still some teams that are eyeing starting pitchers to boost their rotation.
The Mets are one of them and there are four others who would do their best to inherit a starting arm before the deadline. Let's take a look at those five teams.
Teams which are on lookout of starting pitchers ahead of MLB Trade Deadline
#5. Orioles
The Baltimore Orioles' need for starting pitchers is well known. The team has already lost Kyle Bradish, John Means and Tyler Wells for the season. Moreover, Corbin Burnes is also reportedly leaving them in free agency.
The Orioles reportedly engaged in talks with the Detroit Tigers for Tarik Skubal but it seems their pursuit has been halted. However, they might want to take a look at the likes of Blake Snell, Garrett Crochet and Jack Flaherty.
#4. Dodgers
The LA Dodgers started the year on a good note, having an abundance of starting pitchers at their disposal. Fast forward to July 29, and they are in the market for the same position amid a slew of injuries. This has crippled the franchise, relying on young arms who may not be ready to pitch games in the postseason.
With this, they would surely give a thought to bringing in someone like Tarik Skubal, Crochet, Blake Snell or Erick Fedde.
#3. Guardians
The Cleveland Guardians are without their best starter Shane Bieber for the season. Moreover, Triston McKenzie who opted against surgery has been optioned to minors due to underwhelming performances.
Given their winning record (63-42) this season, they may want to fill that hole to make a deep postseason run. They can trade for Jameson Taillon, Tyler Anderson or Erick Fedde ahead of this deadline.
#2. Astros
The Astros have swung past their early season debacle and have surged back into postseason contention and will eye an eighth consecutive ALCS appearance. However, the team is struggling to keep their experienced starters on the mound. Justin Verlander (15-day IL), Luis Garcia (60-day IL) and Lance McCullers Jr. (60-day IL) are unavailable, prompting the team to trade for one or two starting arms.
According to MLB Network's Jon Morosi, the Astros are "actively considering" a deal for Chicago White Sox starter Erick Fedde. Moreover, Detroit Tigers' Jack Flaherty has also been the focus of trade talks between Houston and Detroit.
#1. Mets
Just when things started to fall into place, the New York Mets lost their premier arm Kodai Senga to a calf injury for the season. The Mets, who started badly, have surged back into Wild Card contention.
To be competitive this October, they'll need a premier starting arm in their rotation. Joel Sherman of the New York Post has tagged Chicago White Sox veteran Erick Fedde to be an option. Moreover, the Mets can also go for Jack Flaherty or Tyler Anderson.
