Despite another let-down season from his team, Luis Rengifo has been one of the Los Angeles Angels' most consistent bats this season. Now, it appears as though other contending clubs, have been keeping an eye on the infielder.
In light of the trade deadline, set for Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET, reports have emerged surrounding purported interest in Rengifo. On Tuesday morning, MLB Network analyst Jon Morosi reported that various teams have checked in on the Venezuelan.
"The Angels could move Luis Rengifo and/or Taylor Ward today. The Yankees, Red Sox, and Pirates have inquired on the Angels' available bats. @MLBNetwork" - Jon Morosi
According to Morosi, the Red Sox, Pirates and New York Yankees have all checked in on Luis Rengifo. Indications toward the mentioned teams come amid significant deadline deals for those clubs in anticipation of expected postseason pushes.
Now in his sixth season as a member of the Los Angeles Angels, Rengifo's versatility in the field is most attractive to potential buyers. The 27-year-old has split his time evenly between second and third base this season, appearing in 31 and 45 games, respectively.
"@jonmorosi reports that the Red Sox have checked in on both Luis Rengifo and Taylor Ward. Rengifo has been connected to the Red Sox multiple times in recent weeks. Yankees and Pirates have also checked in on both."
Teams are also interested in what Luis Rengifo has done with the bat. Though he has played just 75 games, the infielder is hitting .300/.438/.421 with six home runs and 30 RBIs.
Both the Yankees and Boston Red Sox have been referred to as the top candidates. The Yankees, looking for more hitting poise in the infield, recently picked up Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Marlins. Meanwhile, the Red Sox have made it clear that they intend to make a postseason push.
Luis Rengifo's array of capabilities makes him deadline darling
Although the potential buyers know that Rengifo is no slugger, the fact that he has played virtually every position this season is attractive. As analyst Mark Feinsand recently wrote for MLB.com:
"Unless the Blue Jays reverse course and decide to trade Vladimir Guerrero Jr., there doesn’t appear to be any Juan Soto-type star set to move prior to the Deadline. But useful position players such as Luis Rengifo, Yandy Díaz, Lane Thomas, Tommy Pham and Paul DeJong are likely to change teams, strengthening contending rosters with two months left in the regular season."
The next several hours will have big consequences not just for Rengifo, but a vast group of MLB talent.
