Blake Snell's return to Cy Young calliber form in July has reportedly prompted interest for a possible trade by the New York Mets. But his heavy contract price is a possible hurdle for the San Francisco Giants in trading him away with the team in desperate need of shedding their payroll.
Blake Snell signed a two-year, $62 million contract with the Giants after taking almost all of the offseason to choose a team. A shocking string of results in April and subsequent injury dropped the defending Cy Young winner's stocks. But there has been a huge turnaround with Snell having a 1.57 ERA with 37 strikeouts in last five starts.
The New York Mets seem like a right choice for Snell if he is to move elsewhere. The Mets have suffered two season-ending injuries to Kodai Senga and Christian Scott and are looking to reboost their rotation. Even the bullpen looks thin with injuries to Reed Garrett and Sean Reid-Foley.
In return for someone like the ace, the Giants will be looking for a lucrative prospects package. Some of the names floated around are Luisangel Acuna, batting at .275 in his last 10 games in the Triple-A and starter Blake Tidwell who has a 13-14 record and 3.72 ERA in his minor league stint.
Do the San Francisco Giants need to trade Blake Snell?
The Giants do not have a dismal record. They are 53-55 and are just four games behind the last National League wild card spot. Their primary reason to trade Blake Snell would be their necessity to cut down on the luxury tax and bring it under the $237 million mark.
Recently, they traded Jorge Soler to the Atlanta Braves. The NL East team will bear the brunt of the $10 million Soler is supposed to earn this year and the rest of the $32 million in the next two seasons. This gives the Giants some breathing room.
Reportedly, Blake Snell's contract is structured in a way that a sizeable part of his deal is non-transferrable and has to be paid by the Giants. This might stop San Francisco in going forward with the trade.
