The Atlanta Braves pulled off a blockbuster move by trading for All-Star outfielder Jorge Soler and veteran reliever Luke Jackson from the San Francisco Giants on Monday.
Soler won the 2021 World Series MVP and earned an All-Star selection in 2023. Jackson, on the other hand, is a right-arm reliever who was picked in the majors 45th overall by the Texas Rangers in the 2010 MLB draft.
The return on the trade includes lefty pitcher Tyler Matzek and minor league infielder Sabin Ceballos.
Soler is a two-time World Series champion, first winning in 2016 with the Chicago Cubs and again in 2021 with the Braves. This will be his second stint with the franchise, which he helped win the 2021 World Series.
Braves fill Ronald Acuna Jr.'s void by adding Jorge Soler and Luke Jackson
Jorge Soler signed a three-year, $42 million contract with the Giants in the offseason, including a $9 million signing bonus and $42 million guaranteed. He will be under club control through the 2026 season.
The Giants had positive ambitions for this season but they went in vain following an underwhelming start to the season. They are currently placed fourth in the NL West division with a 53-55 record and are not in contention to even get a Wild Card berth for the postseason.
With the New York Mets surging in the mid-half of the season, the Braves had to make a move, and it seems they have responded by adding an All-Star bat to their lineup.
Just like at the 2021 trade deadline, the Braves have once again addressed the absence of Ronald Acuna Jr. who is done for the season after an ACL tear in May. They subsequently added a familiar face in Soler, who can once again help the Braves overcome the Mets challenge in the division.
This season, Soler is hitting .240 along with 12 home runs and 40 RBIs.
Meanwhile, another acquisition in the same trade, Luke Jackson, was on a two-year, $11.5 million contract with the Giants ahead of the 2023 season. He was under club control for the 2025 season before becoming an unrestricted free agent for the 2026 season.
In 2024, Jackson has gone 4-2 with a 5.40 ERA and 33 strikeouts across 36 pitching appearances. He should be a good addition in the middle relieving unit for the Braves which has done well this season.
