As the 2024 MLB trade deadline fast approaches, teams like the LA Dodgers are intensely pursuing potential targets to solidify their rosters in the second half of the season. While the Seattle Mariners acquired All-Star slugger Randy Arozarena and the New York Yankees added Jazz Chisholm Jr., plenty of names could be snapped before the deadline ends.
Dodgers looking at utility man Tommy Edman amid injuries
The Dodgers made a substantial splash in the offseason by acquiring high-profile names like Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Tyler Glasnow, among others. However, a string of injuries to several position players has left the team in a dire situation.
Although Tommy Edman has not made any appearances for the St. Louis Cardinals this season because of injury concerns, the Dodgers have reportedly scouted the former Gold Glove winner during his rehab. Edman could occupy the centerfield and also chip in as a shortstop, with the team missing both Mookie Betts and Miguel Rojas due to injuries.
However, the Dodgers will face competition from the Yankees, who also scouted the rehabbing player on Saturday.
Blake Snell's market heating up with Cubs interested in 2x Cy Young winner
Reigning NL Cy Young winner Blake Snell has picked up form in the second half of the season, much like he did in his Cy Young-winning campaign last year. His return to form has brought interest from various teams, with the Chicago Cubs being one of the six teams interested in the veteran ace.
The Cubs have already shrugged off competition to land All-Star third baseman Isaac Paredes, and the addition of Blake Snell could be next on their cards. However, the team has already lost fan-favorite Christopher Morel and prospects Hunter Bigge and Ty Johnson.
While adding Snell would go against President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer's indication to build for the future, stranger things have happened at the trade deadline in the past.
Jack Flaherty is being eyed by the Houston Astros
Although Detroit Tigers starter Jack Flaherty isn't the Astros' first choice ahead of the trade deadline, Houston is pursuing the pitcher due to uncertainties surrounding Tigers’ Tarik Skubal.
As per SNY’s Andy Martino, the Astros will face competition from the Dodgers, Orioles, Yankees and the Mets for Flaherty's signing. To add, All-Star pitcher Yusei Kikuchi, who will be a free agent after the 2024 campaign, is also on the Astros' radar.
