MLB The Show's release date is right around the corner. The game will be released for PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch players on March 28. If you are a baseball fan, this is the game for you.
With the game's release date quickly approaching, the developers, Sony San Diego, have dropped the player ratings list. On this list are five players who received the illustrious 99 overall rating.
Not often do you see a sports game having five active players reach the 99 overall rating. This is something that is kept for the best of the best. Oftentimes in MLB The Show, players who have a 99 rating are old-time greats and specialty cards from events like the postseason.
It's surprising to see so many active players get this much praise. Nobody is really surprised with Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani, and Aaron Judge receiving the honors. The same can't be said for Paul Goldschmidt and Jacob deGrom.
"Only Trout and Ohtani deserve the 99 rating," one fan tweeted.
"What are deGrom and Goldy even doing on this list?" another fan asked.
MLB fans are trying to figure out how deGrom is on this list. He's had trouble staying on the field the last couple of seasons, only pitching in 39 games since 2020.
Other fans are mentioning how insane it is that the Los Angeles Angels have both Trout and Ohtani but miss the postseason every year. Hopefully for them, that changes in 2023. Baseball fans want to see this duo play in October.
Did MLB The Show get their ratings right?
Not many MLB The Show fans are going to argue that Trout and Ohtani don't deserve the 99 rating but what about Judge? Judge is coming off one of the greatest offensive seasons any fan has seen. Not often do fans get to see a record like the American League single-season home run record being broken. Judge was the best hitter on the planet last season, and the 99 rating reflects that.
So what about deGrom? He's the best pitcher in the league when he is healthy, but that's part of the problem. He hasn't been healthy the last couple of seasons. Nobody would question the rating if he hadn't had the injury problems he has had so far.
Goldschmidt may be the odd name on this list, but he's an incredible first baseman. He won the National League MVP Award last season with his insane production at the plate. Another season like 2022 and nobody can argue that Goldschmidt isn't the best first baseman in the league.
