MLB Twitter reacts to Gio Urshela making incredible defensive play in World Baseball Classic: "Guy should still be a Yankee"

Gio Urshela is playing for Team Columbia in the World Baseball Classic. They play in a stacked pool consisting of Mexico, Canada, Great Britain, Columbia, and the United States. Columbia kicked off their pool play Saturday against Team Mexico.

The atmosphere in the ballpark was insane, as the stands were full of fans from both teams. Earlier in the game, Urshela made the fans rise with a stellar defensive play at the "hot corner". He robbed Luis Urias of a base hit, channeling his inner Jeter.

Now that's the way to start a ballgame. If Urshela let that by, that most likely skips all the way to the wall for a stand-up double. Instead, there were two outs in the top of the inning with nobody on.

Plays like this are huge in tournament baseball. Runs are hard to come by, and momentum tends to carry games. Teams don't want to have to battle back early in a tournament like the World Baseball Classic.

"Guy should still be a Yankee. Why they traded him is beyond me," one fan tweeted.
"He's been making these plays for years. His defense is incredible, said another fan.

New York Yankees fans sure do miss Gio Urshela. They would love to have him at third base. They don't have a lot of faith in Josh Donaldson this season.

Columbia will need more plays like this if they want to make it out of Pool C. Only the top two teams advance; they'll have to play mistake-free.

Gio Urshela could be huge for the Los Angeles Angels this season

The Los Angeles Angels traded for Gio Urshela over the winter. They traded minor league right-hander Alejandro Hidalgo to the Minnesota Twins.

Urshela had a solid year at the plate in 2022. He hit .285/.338/.429 with 27 doubles and 13 home runs. He also played in a career-high 144 games last season. This is good news, as the Angels have seen Anthony Rendon take frequent trips to the IL.

The Angels are under a lot of pressure this year to make the postseason. Fans anxiously await to see Shohei Ohtani play meaningful baseball in October. Ohtani is also in the last year of his contract. Another down-season could mean Ohtani leaving in free agency.

Hopefully, for all the fans, the Angels can put it together this year.
