To the surprise of many in the MLB world, the San Diego Padres and New York Mets are reportedly leading the league in financial losses. This is likely largely due to the fact that both teams are spending an astronomical amount on their lineup. The Mets have also made several noticeable improvements to their stadium, including a new Jumbotron.
These losses do not mean that the teams are nearly insolvent or doomed to fail; quite the opposite in fact. Both teams are expected to be among the best in the league in 2023, which will lead to increased revenue. One of the oft-overlooked benefits of winning is being able to raise more money, which in turn leads to more winning.

MLB fans were surprised by this development considering how the teams are thought of in a competitive sense. Being willing to spend the big bucks like the San Diego Padres and New York Mets have been was bound to have some consequences. The important aspect will be how long the two respective owners are willing and able to eat the losses.
In many ways, topping this list is preferable from a fan's perspective. It shows that the team cares more about winning games and battling for a championship than turning a profit. This is far rarer in modern sports than most would like to admit.
If more owners around MLB operated this way, the league would be a better, more competitive place. This is exemplified by the Oakland Athletics and Baltimore Orioles being in the top five by profit. Neither team is competitive, nor are they trying to be despite the financial freedom to do so.
The San Diego Padres and New York Mets are two of the top National League teams and have paid the price to get there.
Who has a better chance to win the National League: New York Mets or San Diego Padres?
Both teams made a lot of noise during the offseason, adding some of the biggest free agents available. Unfortunately, both play in absolutely stacked divisions with great teams. The San Diego Padres have the edge over the New York Mets in that regard, having one primary division rival instead of two.
Whichever team wins the pennant will have to battle through a gauntlet, but the Padres have a slightly better chance than the Mets.
