Alex Bregman remains in the free agency market, with Spring Training just over a month away. A few teams are in contention to sign his services, including the Boston Red Sox, who are yet to sign a quality at-bat this offseason.
Former Athletics pitcher Dallas Braden, on the Baseball is Dead podcast, explained what the Red Sox could do to lure Bregman. As per the panelists, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Detroit Tigers have an advantage in the sweepstakes, as they are willing to spend, having not added any major names this offseason.
The one place where Braden says Boston could stand out is if they get Bregman to become more competitive. Both the Blue Jays and the Tigers are on the same level as the Red Sox when it comes to past records, therefore, for the 3B, it might be a matter of which team offers him a better winning chance. Braden said (1:00:45)
"If Boston represents an opportunity to be competitive, a place where you could be compensated comparably and you know what the window looks like, and then you go to the Tigers, you know what that window looks like. It's a decent looking window and that money is probably going to be comparable. Where you're going to play baseball on the diamond, that's going to matter too.
"So now, between those two teams, which is the more likely landing spot? And if Boston's not willing to meet a number that Detroit is willing to offer because they like what Bregman can represent for their window, now Bregman is in a tough spot or is in a spot where he has to make a decision."
Jon Heyman picks Tigers, Blue Jays as strong comtenders for Alex Bregman, unlikely to sign with Red Sox
As per MLB insider Jon Heyman, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Detroit Tigers are going all-out to sign Alex Bregman.
They seem to be the favorites, with the Red Sox a distant third. Heyman said that the Red Sox are still on his list of teams that could sign Alex Bregman, but it's unlikely in the current scenario.
"I'm going to leave the Red Sox on my list for Bregman, (but) I don't think that's the most likely scenario," he said.
The primary problem with the Red Sox signing Alex Bregman is his position as a third baseman. Boston have Rafael Devers at 3B, who would be willing to move to the other corner if Red Sox lock in the former Astros infielder. But they have said that they won't trade primary first baseman Triston Casas.
