While the winter meetings on Monday were ambushed by a surprise Juan Soto signing the previous night, there were still plenty of major moves made. Several teams got a lot better. A few huge moves were either made official at the meetings or were agreed to, reshaping the MLB landscape for 2025.
Everything major that happened at the 2024 Winter Meetings
Juan Soto and Willy Adames officially sign
Juan Soto and Willy Adames, arguably the top two hitters available, were technically off the market by the time the winter meetings began. Adames signed a seven-year $182 million deal with the San Francisco Giants.
On the eve of the meetings, Soto inked a 15-year $765 million contract with the New York Mets. However, neither was made official until the meetings, so they finally went off the market for good. The Giants know well what it's like to agree to a blockbuster signing but have it fall through thanks to Carlos Correa, but both signings are official.
Max Fried makes history
No other MLB left-handed pitcher has been paid more than Max Fried. The New York Yankees missed out on Soto but were determined not to lose out on Fried, signing him to an eight-year $218 million deal. They offered Soto $760 million, so there's still money to be spent even after securing Fried.
Garrett Crochet is finally dealt
Garrett Crochet was a hot commodity in trade talks last year, but nothing materialized. Finally, a team made the blockbuster move to trade for him. The Boston Red Sox sent an absolute haul of Kyle Teel (No. 25 overall prospect), Braden Montgomery (No. 54 overall), Chase Meidroth (Boston's No. 11 prospect) and Wikelman Gonzalez (Boston's No. 14).
Rangers snag Jake Burger
One of the few productive Miami Marlins players from 2024, Jake Burger landed in Texas with the Rangers. They sent Miami two shortstop prospects, Echedry Vargas and Max Acosta, and pitcher Brayan Mendoza.
Toronto snags brilliant defender
Andres Gimenez, considered one of the best defenders in all of baseball, found a new home. Not long after signing a seven-year extension, the second baseman was traded by the Cleveland Guardians. The Toronto Blue Jays snagged him and Nick Sandlin for Spencer Horwitz and Nick Mitchell.
Orioles get power bat
Tyler O'Neill had a great year with the Boston Red Sox and he parlayed it into a three-year deal with the Baltimore Orioles. They have even started moving the infamous left-field fence back into a normal depth so that O'Neill and Gary Sanchez, another signing they made, can thrive in their home park.
Dodgers ink two players
Blake Treinen was instrumental to the LA Dodgers' World Series run, so they re-signed the reliever for two more years. They didn't stop there, as they added outfield depth with Michael Conforto. Whether or not Teoscar Hernandez is coming back remains to be seen, but they went ahead and added the former All-Star.
