The Los Angeles Dodgers cleared up their payroll issues but in the process lost some of their veteran leaders. Experienced players like Cody Bellinger, Justin Turner, Trea Turner, and Tyler Anderson have all moved on. While there is still plenty of talent on the roster, the loss of some of the team's more established names leaves a void.
The Dodgers will now look to a separate set of players to guide this team to their 11th consecutive postseason appearance. Clayton Kershaw remains the elder statesman and will lead the pitching core. Players like Max Muncy and Will Smith will also be called on to manage the younger prospects.
MLB writer Rowan Kavner believes this is an opportunity for two players in particular to step up:
"It's an opportunity for guys like Freddie and Mookie to step up with their voices and not only lead by example."
In a recent piece for Fox Sports, Kavner discussed the Los Angeles Dodgers' need for a leader on the field and in the clubhouse.
"In light of roster changes, Dave Roberts encouraged Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman to become more vocal leaders within the #Dodgers clubhouse. 'It's an easy nudging, but I think it's going to happen organically.'" - Matthew Moreno
Mookie Betts has been a Dodger since 2020 when he signed a massive 12-year, $365 million contract. His numbers have been exceptional since moving to southern California.
Freddie Freeman, who is three years older than Betts, will begin his second season with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Manager Dave Roberts will rely heavily on him to command the infield and set an example for the younger players.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have lost experienced players on the offensive and defensive side
Justin Turner's departure to the Boston Red Sox was a major blow for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Turner was a fan favorite and one of the most respected players in the clubhouse.
"The Dodgers are going to really miss having Trea Turner. I don’t know how you fill the void in the lineup he leaves and it’s tough considering he’s going to a team that will be a direct rival of LA in the playoffs. This is a brutal loss whether LA fans want to admit it or not." - Dusty Baker
Similarly, the loss of Trea Turner will leave a hole in the infield. 25-year-old Gavin Lux will likely start and will need support from more mature players.
Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman's ability on the field is unquestionable. Both players are former MVPs and World Series champions. They have won Gold Gloves and are considered exceptional fielders. The club will expect more than just runs from these two All-Stars. They will expect the two players to speak up and take command.
