On Friday's episode of the "On Base with Mookie Betts" podcast, Betts and Fernando Tatis Jr. talked about superstars Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge's potential performances in a "dunk contest." While talking about their passion for sports other than baseball, Tatis revealed that he played basketball growing up.

When asked to choose four big league players for a hypothetical MLB dunk contest, Tatis replied:

"Byron Buxton... Elly De La Cruz... myself... and Lorenzen... but out of all of those, I got you winning" Tatis said, referring to Betts as the winner.

Despite Aaron Judge's height of 6-feet-7, the Betts and Tatis doubted the New York Yankees captain's chances of winning a dunk contest. Betts said:

"I don't think Judge can win a dunk contest. I think he's huge and he can dunk a lot, but I don't think he would [be able to win a dunk contest]."

Finally, the duo agreed that, just like his talents on the diamond, Shohei Ohtani is probably pretty good at dunking a basketball, too.

"He should [be pretty good at dunking], He's pitching, batting... and stealing bases," Tatis said.
"He does everything better than everybody, so I'm gonna assume he can dunk," Betts added.

Shohei Ohtani chasing triple crown with one game to go in the regular season

Having already accomplished an incredible 50-50 season, been crowned an NL West champion and broken the stolen base record for a Japanese player, Shohei Ohtani looks to go after another amazing feat. Already leading the NL for home runs and RBIs, only Luis Arraez's batting average, which is better by a mere 0.004, stands in Ohtani's way as the 30-year-old aims to finalize the batting triple crown.

Only one game remains for both players in the regular season. Luis Arraez faces the Arizona Diamondbacks, while Shohei Ohtani plays the Colorado Rockies. In the last five games, Arraez is batting .222 with four hits, while Ohtani is batting more than double that, with a .571 batting average and 12 hits in his last five games.

It will be interesting to see if Ohtani can overtake Arraez in the nick of time to add to an already near-perfect individual season. Playing the Colorado Rockies, who Ohtani has been typically dominant against in the past, at the hitters-friendly Coors Field is the perfect situation for the Japanese star to potentially bridge the gap.
