Mookie Betts was all smiles when recalling an incident he had with a couple of New York Yankees fans in right field during the World Series. Two months after the confrontation, Betts spoke about the anger and frustration he suppressed due to the bigger goal ahead.
During Game 4 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium, Betts made a play in right field to catch Gleyber Torres' fly ball in the first inning. When he caught it, two fans seated there in Yankees jerseys tried to take the ball out of his hand by grabbing the outfielder's glove, which could have resulted in an injury at a crucial stage.
Though Betts didn't show much emotion on the field that day and let the authorities handle it, he held back nothing when recalling the incident on a podcast with Kevin Hart.
"I would really say, 'F**k you guys.' I get it — try and get the ball, cool. But like, you tried to grab my stuff. Yeah, like you tried to—yeah, I was in the moment," Betts said. "So I thought about throwing a ball at him, and then I realized, 'Well, you ain't gonna do s**t.' Yeah. Go back to right."
Two fans involved were proud of their act following Mookie Betts foul ball incident
While the two fans, identified by ESPN as Austin Capobianco and John Peter, were immediately ejected from the game, they were proud of their actions, saying they wouldn't let down their Yankees even if it meant using unfair means.
"We're not going to go out of our way to attack. If it's in our area, we're going to 'D' up," Capobianco told ESPN. "Someone defends, someone knocks the ball. We talk about it. We're willing to do this."
"I know when I'm in the wrong and as soon as I did it, I was like, 'Boys I'm out of here,'" Capobianco added. "I patrol that wall and they know that."
Mookie Betts, though frustrated since his team lost Game 4, was ready to turn the page with the World Series still in focus.
"When it comes to the person in play, it doesn't matter," Betts said. "We lost. It's irrelevant. I'm fine. He's fine. Everything's cool. We lost the game and that's what I'm kind of focused on. We got to turn the page and get ready for tomorrow."
Mookie Betts and his teammates would eventually have the last laugh as they rallied back in Game 5 to win the World Series at Yankee Stadium.
