The Los Angeles Dodgers are seeing a lot of progress with Mookie Betts. The star shortstop has been out since early June with a fractured left hand sustained when he was hit by a pitch. Betts is making his way back to a team that is truly rounding into form, but he still has a way to go before he's back on the field as the starting shortstop.

Fabian Ardaya, Dodgers beat reporter, said on X (formerly known as Twitter):

"Mookie Betts continues to swing a bat and has progressed to soft toss and flips, per Dave Roberts. Could take batting practice soon."

Betts has been working on his fielding for a while, but he's progressed to soft toss and flips for batting. Manager Dave Roberts believes he'll be able to take batting practice off of pitchers soon.

Ardaya also has an update on another injured star. Roberts added that Max Muncy’s progress is “stagnant" as he continues to deal with some discomfort. His tests, however, have come back clean.

Where might Mookie Betts play when he returns?

Mookie Betts is an interesting spot when he comes back. Barring an unprecedented recovery speed, he will be out past the MLB Trade Deadline. That means the Dodgers may well have brought in major reinforcements.

There's also the fact that Miguel Rojas has done pretty well at shortstop in Betts' absence. It's not even Betts' natural position, so they might opt to keep him there and move Betts.

If they do, he could return to second base, but that's where Gavin Lux is playing and where Max Muncy could spend time after returning. That might push Betts all the way back to the outfield, where he has been dominant in the past.

This all depends on what the Dodgers do at the deadline. They're reportedly targeting a plethora of infielders like Isaac Paredes and Luis Rengifo, which might complicate Betts' spot when he comes back. Either way, he will have a spot somewhere. It just might not be at shortstop anymore since he wasn't as crisp there defensively.
