Mookie Betts of the Dodgers is adored by players from the league. In addition to demonstrating some tremendous skill on the field, Betts is also wellnregarded for his conversational abilities.
In a recent edition of his podcast, On Base, Betts invited Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies for a discussion. Early in the podcast, the exchange turned to Albies' habit of collecting exotic pets.
During the conversation, it came to light that the Atlanta Braves star owns seven dogs and over 30 species of exotic fish, including sharks, who are housed in massive aquariums.
In 2019, Albies inked a seven-year, $35 million deal with Atlanta. As such, Mookie Betts turned to questionning how much Albies spends on pet care. At one point, Betts asked if half his pay cheque goes to pet care, to which Albies responded with a coy nod. While Albies' words arguably cannot be taken at face value, his response did indicate that he spends a significant amount on pet care.
Born in Curacao, Albies made his Braves debut in 2017. In each of the next two seasons, he was named an All-Star, before his career season of 2021 that saw him hit .259/.310/.488 with 30 home runs and 106 RBIs to win a Silver Slugger award.
"Yeah, Ozzie Albies looks A-OK. The @Braves second baseman smokes a 3-run homer 104.6 mph during his rehab assignment with the #GoStripers" - Minor League Baseball
Although he was regarded as one of Atlanta's top hitters, Albies' last game came on July 21 against the St. Louis Cardinals. Since then, the 27-year-old has been out of action with a fractured wrist, although he has recently been cleared to begin his Triple-A rehab assignment.
Mookie Betts, a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers, hosts his podcast in an effort to showcase the personal side of his MLB counterparts.
Mookie Betts remains set on helping his team deep into October
While Ozzie Albies may or may not see postseason action, Mookie Betts certainly will. A career .251/.333/.377 hitter in the postseason, Betts knows how to show up for his team in a big way. A 2018 World Series winner, watch out for the Dodgers to look to Betts for inspiration.
Flanked by a once in a generation pool of talent on the Dodgers, many expect Betts and company to take LA to the World Series. However, even if that doesn't pan out this season, Mookie's podcast will likely continue to show fans to more human side of some of the game's biggest names.
