New York Yankees closer Clay Holmes has been selected for the All-Star game for the second time in his three-year stint with the team. He will join teammates Aaron Judge and Juan Soto for the Midsummer Classic in Arlington later this month.
Holmes was announced as a two-time American League All-Star on Sunday. The 31-year-old will be part of the bullpen for the July 16 All-Star Game at Globe Life Field.
However, Clay Holmes has been struggling and hasn't performed like an All-Star lately. In his last seven appearances since June 13, he has given up 11 hits, eight earned runs, and two home runs in 6 2/3 innings.
Fans were unhappy with the news of his All-Star selection. Several fans took to X/Twitter to express their dissatisfaction with the news.
“Luke Weaver should be going not Clay,” a fan said.
“Munoz Robbed,” another fan said.
“How does a guy who blows 5 games and caused the Yankees to fall into 2nd make the All Star team. I’m a Yankee fan but that is a travesty,” another fan wrote.
Many fans expressed that Holmes does not deserve to be selected for the All-Star game.
“He does not belong on the all-star team. Period,” a comment reads.
“He does not deserve it. He has been pitching poorly for weeks now,” another comment reads.
“He’s lucky voting ended last week,” someone wrote.
During his recent appearances, Holmes has blown two save opportunities, adding to the New York Yankees' struggles. Despite losing 16 of their last 22 games, the Yankees have a record of 55 wins and 37 losses and are second in the AL East.
Clay Holmes ‘surprised’ being selected for the All-Star Game
Before his recent struggles, Clay Holmes had an excellent start to the season, giving up only four earned runs and 28 hits in 29 1/3 innings over his first 30 appearances.
Discussing his selection in the All-Star game, Holmes said (via NY Post):
“I’m excited. This place means a lot to me -- the organization, teammates and coaches, all the people here. To be able to represent all the guys here, it’s something I don’t take lightly. It’s a huge honor, and I’m super grateful for this opportunity.”
“I was probably a little surprised. The All-Star Game is a hard thing to make. I don’t think you could ever fully expect it. I’m not going in with a zero ERA.”
Clay Holmes was traded to the New York Yankees by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2021 after he was picked by the Pirates in the 2011 Draft and made his MLB debut with the team in 2018.
