Saturday night's game saw the New York Yankees face a terrible 9-1 defeat against division rivals the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees fell to a high deficit loss after winning the opener of their series 6-1.
The Bronx Bombers' pitching woes were evident during the game, as starting pitcher Nestor Cortes allowed the Rays to build a 5-0 lead by the middle of the fifth inning. The 29-year-old pitched for 4.1 innings and allowed six earned runs on eight hits while striking out just one batter.
Yankees fans reacted to the tough loss, with many blaming Nestor Cortes for the defeat.
“Nestor is not good at home either I guess,” a fan said.
“Nestor Cortes really backed up his tweet today with that awful performance. Dude will be pitching for the Long Island Ducks in another year or two,” another fan said.
“Nestor ain't it anymore. Tough to win games when Cortes constantly puts you in a 5-0 hole. Doesn't help the whole team didn't hit either. All-Star break didn't do anything for the team I see,” another fan wrote.
Many other fans reacted as well, with some blaming the offense for its lack of runs and poor performance.
"This offense is genuinely putrid," a comment reads.
“Put Nestor, DJ, & Verdugo on a SpaceX rocket to outer space and don’t look back,” another comment reads.
“Desperately need some offense beyond Soto & Judge. Also, Nestor should be long middle inning relief,” someone wrote.
The Yankees' offense managed to score only one run on five hits in 30 at-bats, with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Nestor Cortes discussed his performance while addressing the Yankees' struggles
The New York Yankees have lost 19 of their last 30 games. Discussing his own performance and the team's struggles, Nestor Cortes said (via SNY TV):
“Time to flip the page. We gotta be better starting with myself, I think the last two or three hasn’t been great for me, just gotta be better when I’m out there.
"We've been struggling… We're one or two games back after today. Everybody is saying how bad we've been playing but you look across the league and see we're right there with them… This team is just a tick away from being great."
The Yankees are 59-41 and second in the AL East while the Rays are in fourth with a 49-49 record. With the teams set to face each other again on Sunday, it will be interesting to see who comes out on top.
