Kodai Senga has joined his new team, the New York Mets, for spring training and is already facing hurdles. Considering it is his first season in MLB, it was expected to take some time for him to transition. Reports of a rough throwing session caused some discomfort among Mets fans, who expect Senga to be a top-tier starting pitcher.
Thankfully, it is still only February, and Senga has plenty of time to work through the issues he is facing. While the professional leagues in Japan are nearly identical, there are key differences, especially for pitchers. The two main differences are the size of the baseball and the dimensions of the pitcher’s mound.
Jon Heyman reported on the tough outing from Senga and explained that the team isn't too worried yet.
However, this did little to quell the fears of New York Mets fans. Part of the burden of heightened expectations is that every hurdle feels insurmountable. Considering the Mets are supposed to be one of the best MLB teams, the expectations could not be much higher. Perhaps, as they see positive growth from the New York Mets, not every issue will create such a polarized response.
Despite calls for calm, some fans are already expecting a disappointing season. The National League is as good as it has ever been, with several teams capable of winning it all. Even within the Mets' division, the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies are also World Series contenders.
Kodai Senga is trying to transition to MLB in a fashion similar to Seiya Suzuki and Shohei Ohtani. Both players had great success overseas and managed to hit the ground running in North American baseball. If Kodai Senga is able to do so as well, the New York Mets will have one of the best pitching rotations in the game.
Being able to adjust to slightly different rules will be key to Kodai Senga's success in MLB.
The New York Mets are perfectly set up to help Kodai Senga transition to the big leagues
Senga could not have asked for a better team to break into the league with. Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer are ahead of him on the depth chart, lessening the pressure. The pair of veteran pitchers can also share their knowledge and experience with Senga, who is technically a rookie.
There will be some missteps along the way, but Kodai Senga is poised to make a big impact on this talented Mets team.
