Francisco Alvarez is getting his chance to shine with the New York Mets. The team is expected to call up the prospect catcher ahead of its Friday home opener. Alvarez is considered the organization's top prospect.
He's getting called up in the wake of Omar Narvaez's injury. Narvaez strained his left calf and could miss up to eight weeks. He's officially been placed on the IL.
Alvarez already has some MLB games under his belt. He was called up late last season as the Mets wanted to add an extra bat to their lineup before their postseason run.
In five games, he posted a .167 batting average in 12 at-bats. While he struggled, he did hit a double and a home run during his short time in the majors.
"It's about time. Every other team has called up their top prospects. Should have Baty there Friday too," one fan tweeted.
"Now get Baty and Vientos up here too," another fan tweeted.
New York Mets fans are ecstatic to see Francisco Alvarez get a legitimate shot. He didn't get a fair shot last year after just five games.
Alvarez has huge power at the plate that many scouts believe will transition easily to the majors. Don't be surprised if he sees great success at the plate early on.
Francisco Alvarez could be the sparkplug this team needs
Francisco Alvarez was signed as an international free agent in 2018 out of Venezuela. He began his career as a 17-year-old with the GCL Mets, becoming the youngest player in the league.
He only lasted seven games in the league before he was called up to the Kingsport Mets. In 35 games for the Kingsport Mets, he slashed .282/.377/.443.
From 2021-2022 he spent his time moving up the ranks in the minor leagues. He'd hit a snag in July of last season as doctors discovered loose bodies in his right ankle. The injury limited his production at the plate, but a cortisone shot kept him from missing time.
That's the kind of guy you want to play for your team. Even though he was dealing with an ankle injury, he did everything that he could to stay on the field and help his team.
Look for Francisco Alvarez to step up and take hold of the starting catcher role. He's healthy and ready to show the world his talents.
