The first lineup card of the New York Yankees season is out and Aaron Boone is already creating an uproar amongst the Yankees' fanbase. The Yankees face the Philadelphia Phillies in Florida on Saturday.
Some familiar names are on the card. Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Harrison Bader, Gleyber Torres and Oswaldo Cabrera will all make an appearance. Younger prospects like Jasson Dominguez and Anthony Seigler were also given an opportunity to show what they can do.
New York Yankees fans have high expectations for their club. Although we are still in February, fans are unhappy with some of Boone's decisions. The fanbase took to Twitter to vent their frustration.
Yankees fans were disappointed to see Isiah Kiner-Falefa starting at shortstop. The former Texas Ranger was inconsistent last season and looked uncomfortable in the infield.
With two of MLB's top prospects on the roster, many fans expected Boone to give Oswald Peraza or Anthony Volpe a chance. Both players have been knocking on the door. Both rank in the top 100 MLB prospects, with Volpe coming in at no. 5.
The offseason was filled with speculation that Peraza would start at shortstop. The 22-year-old Venezuelan impressed during the final stages of the 2022 season. Over an 18-game stretch, he finished with an impressive .306/.404/.429 slash line and a .833 OPS. Peraza also made his debut in the postseason against the Houston Astros.
New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone opted for youth with his first lineup card of the season
Aaron Boone did give some of the organization's prospects an opportunity. Highly touted Dominican outfielder Jasson Dominguez is ranked as the no. 47 prospects in the league. Dominguez started the game over outfielder Everson Pereira.
The 23-year-old switch-hitter catcher Anthony Seigler is another exciting prospect. The club has high hopes for him down the line.
Boone decided to opt for experience on the mound with veteran pitcher Ryan Weber getting the start. The 32-year-old previously played for the Atlanta Braves, Seattle Mariners, Tampa Bay Rays, Boston Red Sox and Milwaukee Brewers.
It is early in the season, but the New York Yankees will be looking to find a winning formula. The club has failed to reach the World Series since defeating the Philadelphia Phillies in 2009. The pressure will be on Boone to deliver a championship to the Bronx.
