The decision to assign prospect Jasson Dominguez to the minors has created some friction within the New York Yankees fanbase. Dominguez is one of the team's rising stars and has been phenomenal during spring training.
"The Martian," as he is fittingly nicknamed, was reassigned to the minors after the Yankees' win on Thursday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The club invested heavily in the young outfielder and signed him to a franchise record $5.1 million bonus in 2019.
Age may have been a factor as the 20-year-old is still relatively inexperienced. Since signing with the club, he has only played 176 games in the minors. Although he has gradually worked his way up to AA ball, he is yet to play a game at AAA level.
The announcement came as a shock to some sections of the fanbase. New York Yankees fans took to Twitter to vent their frustrations at the controversial move.
Jasson Dominguez has done all he can to justify a place in the MLB. The young outfielder has been absolutely sensational in spring training.
Over 22 at-bats, he has recorded four home runs, nine RBIs, 10 hits, eight runs and a stolen base. He has a .455 batting average and a 1.565 OPS.
Outfielder Jasson Dominguez is the no. 2 ranked prospect on the New York Yankees
Jasson Dominguez is currenty the no. 47 ranked prospect in MLB. He is the no. 2 ranked prospect on the Yankees behind only Anthony Volpe.
Brian Cashman stated that the Yankees were in the market for a left fielder. Aaron Hicks and Estevan Florial are both currently in the running for the starting job. Dominguez could have been an ideal candidate for the third outfield position.
Fans were hoping to see manager Aaron Boone provide some of the younger players with an opportunity at the highest level. Oswald Peraza, Anthony Volpe, Andres Chaparro and Oswaldo Cabrera have all had strong preseasons.
Although Dominguez has been moved down, the switch-hitting sensation made an impression at camp. The future is bright for the talented Dominican star.
