New York Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo didn't make the trip with the team to Fort Myers to play against the Boston Red Sox. The veteran stayed back as he was dealing with some back issues.
Rizzo's back has given him some problems in the past. He missed 20 games last season because of it, and needed an epidural shot to be ready for the postseason.
Despite that, Rizzo and the Yankees signed a two-year, $40 million deal over the winter. As such, it makes sense not to push him this early. They need him to be in the lineup more often than not if they want to have a successful 2023 season.
Staying ahead of these little injuries is going to be vital. When he's on the field, he's a force. Last season, Rizzo hit .224/.338/.480 with 32 home runs (tied for a career-high in home runs) and 75 RBIs.
New York Yankees fans, however, are tired of their team putting their faith in players with an injury history. The team knew Anthony Rizzo would be dealing with back issues again this season and still signed him to a two-year deal.
"Can't believe we re-signed him. Another masterful job by Cashman (who also isn't going anywhere)," one fan tweeted.
"Please make it stop please," said another fan.
The hype the team generated over the offseason is starting to slow down. Fans aren't as excited for the season to start as they were weeks ago.
Anthony Rizzo is the latest New York Yankees player to be dealing with an injury
Injuries have been piling up for the New York Yankees. Harrison Bader felt discomfort in Wednesday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals. After getting some testing done, it was revealed that he had strained his left oblique. He'll be out for at least six weeks.
Another injury the team is dealing with comes from the arm of Carlos Rodon. Rodon is dealing with a forearm strain that will take him out of contention for Opening Day.
Tommy Kahnle and Lou Trivino won't be with the team on Opening Day either. Kahnle is dealing with bicep tendinitis, while Trevino is dealing with an elbow sprain. This is a big blow to a team that will miss Frankie Montas for much of the season, as he had shoulder surgery in February.
