New York Yankees prospect Anthony Volpe's status is still undetermined for opening day. The young slugger has had an impressive spring so far, hitting .277 with three home runs and five stolen bases.
Volpe has been battling prospect infielder Oswald Peraza and veteran Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who held down shortstop for the Yankees last season. Kiner-Falefa has recently taken reps in the outfield, a sign that he has lost the shortstop job this season.
The shortstop battle will likely come down to Oswald Peraza or Anthony Volpe, with Volpe getting some support from high-level voices in the organization. Peraza started to struggle down the final stretch of spring training. Peraza is hitting .171 with a home run and two stolen bases.
One thing that could move the needle for Volpe is his elite speed. The team will be without speedy outfielder Harrison Bader while he nurses an oblique injury. With the new rules and bigger bases, teams want all the speed they can get.
"Volpening Day - Make it happen," one fan tweeted.
"I'll almost feel bad for Volpe if he breaks camp. Expectations are going to be INSANE. Let's go dude," another fan tweeted.
New York Yankees fans don't think there should even be a question about whether Anthony Volpe should crack the opening day roster. He's performed well above expectations in the spring.
Some fans think the team should keep both Peraza and Volpe, teaching Volpe to play third base or second base. Switching positions is often easier said than done. The Yankees also have Gleyber Torres and DJ LeMahieu at second base as well.
The future of the New York Yankees is in good hands with Anthony Volpe
Anthony Volpe is a baseball grinder. He began pre-spring preparations at the New York Yankees' player development complex in late November.
One player who was often in the same hitting group as Volpe was DJ LeMahieu. LeMahieu had nothing but good things to say about Volpe and his dedication to his craft. He called Volpe a "baseball rat." He wasn't surprised that he was having a great spring. Another player who gave public praise to the young infielder was Aaron Judge.
If you're going to impress two players in the organization, those are the two that you want to impress. With opening day a week away, the Yankees must decide on their roster soon.
