The New York Yankees acquired third baseman Josh Donaldson and shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa by virtue of a March 13, 2022 trade with the Minnesota Twins. At the time, it looked like a win-win.
On paper, the New York Yankees were receiving a former MVP with tremendous hitting power and a former Gold Glover comfortable in nearly every position.
In return, the Yankees shipped infielder Gio Urshela and catcher Gary Sanchez to Minnesota. Ushela's 2021 offensive production has declined by a third since 2019 while Sanchez has failed to hit his weight for the past two seasons.

Further delight was imparted on the fanbase when Josh Donaldson capped off their Opening Day game against the Boston Red Sox with an extra-innings RBI double.
However, as the summer began to take shape, Donaldson cooled down considerably. By July, he was hitting under .200. Although the 36-year old hit .297/.371/.568 with 41 home runs and 123 RBIs in 2015 as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays, he finished 2022 with a .222 average.
Fans shared their thoughts on the trade a year on:
The same could be said of Isiah Kiner-Falefa. "IKF" finished the 2022 season with a slashline of .261/.314./.327, making 15 fielding errors at shortstop.
While neither Sanchez nor Urshela saw any particular improvements in offensive output during the 2022 season with the Twins, fans seem to miss the pair.
Donaldson and Kiner-Falefa will become free agents at the end of the year. Although New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone has defended both on several occasions, he can sense the dissatisfaction that is being directed at these players from the fanbase.
The New York Yankees face mounting concerns from fans regarding which position will be matched with which player. The team kicks off their regular season against the San Francisco Giants on March 30.
New York Yankees will need to justify this trade to fans in 2023
Rumors are further swirling about the future of these players as regular starters for the New York Yankees this season.
A group of young talents, headed by 2019 first-overall pick Anthony Volpe, have had an impressive preseason. Volpe has legions of fans calling for him to start on Opening Day.
Although both Donaldson and IKF look likely for Opening Day slots, if 2023 turns out to be like 2022, it may be their last campaign in the pinstripes.
