New York Yankees set for surprise Jazz Chisholm Jr. trade? Recent slump pushes Bronx Bombers into the market

The struggles of Marlins utiliy man Jazz Chisholm Jr. have largely reflected those of his team this season. With the Marlins now touting one of the worst records in MLB, some have begun to wonder if the team's star player could soon be on the move.

In a recent piece for SNY, writer Anthony McCarron examined the Yankees' appetite for the former All-Star. In the piece, McCarron weighted the potential pros and cons of a deal involving Chishom from a Yankees prespective before arriving at a conclusion that the Bronx Bombers could, and should, make a move for him.

Although Jazz Chisholm Jr. has exclusively served as an outfielder since 2022, the Bahamanian was previously a second base. This reasoning underpins McCarron's major point in favor of the New York Yankees pursuing Jazz.

To date, the Yankees have largely relied on the struggling Gleyber Torres at second. In addition to his mediocre .221 average and eight homers through 86 games, Torres' fielding has also come under fire. Last week, Marcus Stroman even became visibly upset at Torres after the Venezuelan failed to turn a double play against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Moreover, McCarron highlighted that after Jazz Chisholm Jr. makes $2.6 million this year, he will be eligible for arbitration. Still only 26, this means that the Yankees could pursue a long-term agreement with the speedster, which is something that the Miami Marlins have been unable - or unwilling - to get done since he made his MLB debut in 2020.

Yankees are not the only option in Jazz Chisholm Jr.

In recent days, several teams including the Giants, Phillies and Red Sox have been mentioned as possible trade destinations for Chisholm. However, the intangible aspect might suggest that the flashy fielder is a good fit in the Bronix. As McCarron wrote for SNY:

"One of the many qualities that makes Chisholm fun to watch is that he’s got a big personality and can be flashy. We’d have to see how that would play among the buttoned-up Yankees, though, frankly, their product could use that kind of flair."

This year, the world has watched Yankees fans fall in love with Juan Soto. Should Chisholm find himself in the pinstripes, there is certainly a chance that he could garner a similar reaction.
