Friday marked the first time since 1981 that the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees met in the World Series. Both teams featured exceptional pitchers and incredible hitters, making for a competitive matchup.
Jack Flaherty (1-2, 7.04 ERA in the postseason) was up against a batting lineup featuring the mighty Aaron Judge, while 2023 Cy Young winner, Gerrit Cole (1-0, 3.31 ERA), faced Shohei Ohtani & Co.
The game got off to a quick start. Both teams sent men on bases, but neither could bring home a run as Flaherty and Cole escaped unscathed.
Both pitchers dominated until the fifth inning, where Will Smith scored an RBI single, driving in Kike Hernandez for the first run of the game.
The following inning, in the top of the sixth, Giancarlo Stanton, the 2024 ALCS MVP, smashed his fourth straight home run, a two-run shot, which gave the Yankees a pivotal 2-1 lead in the game. The 412-ft left-field home run forced Dave Roberts to replace Jack Flaherty with Anthony Banda.
The Dodgers tied the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. Yankees reliever Tommy Kahnle allowed a double to Shohei Ohtani, who reached home on Mookie Betts' sac fly.
With the scores tied 2-2, the game went to extra innings, where the Yankees made the first dent. Jazz Chisholm Jr. singled to right field off Blake Treinen before stealing second and subsequently third base. His baserunning came in handy as a groundout from Anthony Volpe led Chisholm in, giving the Yankees a 3-2 lead.
Jake Cousins started the 10th inning for the Yankees. He retired Will Smith before walking Gavin Lux, followed by Tommy Edman's infield single. Aaron Boone pulled the plug on Cousins and brought in Nestor Cortes to face Shohei Ohtani.
Alex Verdugo made a terrific play in the foul zone to catch Ohtani's fly ball. However, Edman and Chris Taylor (who ran for Lux) advanced to second and third, respectively. Mookie Betts arrived at the plate and was intentionally walked.
A four-seamer from Cortes was enough for Freddie Freeman to bring the game to a close. The first baseman struck a 423-foot right field walkoff grand slam, leading the Dodgers to a 6-3 win.

Giancarlo Stanton and Freddie Freeman home runs tonight
Home runs are generally hard to come by in a big game like the World Series, but there were two struck in Game 1.
Dodgers ace Jack Flaherty had a nice day until he gave up a two-run home run to Giancarlo Stanton in the sixth inning.
The second home run was special in all aspects. With the game on the line, Freddie Freeman sent fans into a frenzy after hitting a walk-off grand slam in the 10th inning to land the Dodgers a 6-3 win. It was the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history.
